What one of our itineraries actually looks like.

Day 1

Nairobi

Met at JKIA and driven to Giraffe Manor or Hemingways. Afternoon at the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, dinner with your guide to go through the route.

Days 2 – 4

Maasai Mara — Naboisho Conservancy

Light aircraft from Wilson. Three nights in a conservancy camp: dawn drives, a night drive, a walk with a Maasai guide, and the river crossings in season.

Day 5

Balloon at dawn

Lift off at 6am over the Talek, breakfast on the plain where you land, afternoon free in camp.

Days 6 – 7

Amboseli — under Kilimanjaro

The big tusker herds against the mountain, best at first light. Guided birding on the swamps and a visit to a Maasai group ranch.

Days 8 – 10

Diani Beach — the reef

Fly to Ukunda. Three nights on the south coast: dhow at sunset, snorkelling at Kisite, and a farewell dinner at Ali Barbour’s cave.

Kenya works all year. What changes is the price, the grass, and how many other vehicles are at the sighting.

July – October

High season · Book 8 months out

The migration is in the Mara and the country is dry, so game concentrates on water. Camps charge peak rates and the good ones sell out first.

January – March

Hot and dry · Best for the coast

Clear skies, calving season in the south, excellent big-cat viewing and flat calm water on the reef. Our own favourite window.

June & November

Shoulder · 20–30% less

Short rains fall in the afternoon and clear. Green country, dramatic light, far fewer vehicles, and rates well below July.

April – May

Long rains · Lowest rates

Some camps close and black-cotton tracks get difficult. If you accept wet afternoons, this is the cheapest Kenya you will ever see.

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, applied for online before departure. It is not issued on arrival, so leave a few days. East African citizens are exempt. We send the link and check your approval before you fly.

Yellow fever certification is required if you arrive from a country where it is endemic. Malaria prophylaxis is advised for the Mara, the coast and the low-lying parks — Nairobi and the highlands are above the mosquito line. Speak to a travel clinic six weeks before you fly.

Prices quoted are per person sharing, land only. They include camps and lodges on the stated board basis, park and conservancy fees, your private vehicle and guide, internal light aircraft where listed, drinking water, and AMREF Flying Doctors cover. International flights, visas, tips and premium drinks are not included.

Nairobi to the Mara is five to six hours by road, or forty-five minutes from Wilson Airport. Driving is cheaper and shows you the Rift Valley; flying buys you most of a game-viewing day. On trips under eight nights we usually fly at least one leg.

Yes, from about five. A private vehicle matters more with children than anything else — you set the pace and turn back when they have had enough. Several conservancy camps have family tents, and some run junior ranger programmes. Under-fives are restricted at a handful of camps; we will tell you which.

For July to October, eight to twelve months — the good conservancy camps are small and fill early. For January to March, four to six months. Shoulder-season trips in June and November can often be built six weeks out at meaningfully lower rates.
