A Swahili island world of carved doors, narrow lanes and dhows — no cars, no hurry, and some of the oldest lived-in streets in East Africa.
Lamu is Kenya at its most timeless — a UNESCO-listed Swahili town of coral-stone houses, carved doors and narrow lanes where dhows still outnumber cars. The pace is slow by design; days are measured in tides, calls to prayer, and the light on the water.
We stay in restored Swahili houses on Lamu and Shela, sail the archipelago by dhow, and eat the coast's Indian-Ocean cooking. It is the quietest, most atmospheric way to end a journey, and a world apart from the plains.
